Lakefield National Park - July 19

Cape York - here we come !!  We packed up from our "luxury bush camp" and headed out to Lakefield NP - the second largest NP in Queensland (Simpson Desert being #1).

First detour was the Coloured Sands at Elim Beach, after driving through the quite tidy and modern Aboriginal settlement of Hopevale. Vin braved the first 4WD track across the low tidal estuary to the beach - the rest of us walked across - with the one constant thought at the foreground of our minds - what about crocodiles? Snakes & spiders are nothing to the ever present fear of the saltie, or Estuarine Crocodile ( yes they deserve capitals!). We (or I should say the car) survived & we drove back to the main track of the NP.

Next detour-a 5km sand track to Horseshoe Lagoon, where we were surprised by the lovely coverage of white lilli-pads on the water. Onto the Old Laura Homestead (1874) - after eating our lunch we wondered around the ruins.

Got to our pre-booked campsite at Hanns Crossing - only to find our spot double booked! Threw the tent up anyway and made the most of a disappointing situation. The kids & Vin played a very happy game of Catan, with the team of Adam & Jas winning. Me? I finished my second book in peace.
