Charters Towers - July 13

We drove on stopping to visit the old gold-mining town of Charters Towers. A pretty, old town centre with wide streets and grand old buildings. It must have been busy in its heyday but after 12 on a Sunday the centre was empty - but at least that made it easy to park the camper-trailer!

We drove a small distance on to Fletchers Creek to bush camp and were met by a flotilla of motorhomes and caravans - its one of the stops the grey nomads use for extended periods. They can sometimes have 400 caravans there! A recent survey at the town suggested the nomads pumped $8M to the economy!

We smartly camped away from the crowds across the road in a more secluded spot. Ben collected stones and arranged them for a campfire while Jasmine and Jordan lit a great fire which we all sat around to while away the evening. Jasmine tended the fire that night with great skill. It was a memorable time talking around the fire and afterwards Jasmine commented that it was her favourite night so far!

Sad
Funny no one had camped where we had as it was such a great spot! We learnt our lesson when these rather pretty and innocent looking cockerels marched in tandem and jumped into the branches of a nearby tree at dusk. It was too late to move and they didn't appear to troublesome...  until much later when we were tucked in and then they proceeded to crow regularly.... 11pm, 3:50am, 4:20am... (times supplied by Robyn).
